This is truly shocking. Research has found that bacteria grow on tiny particles of natural magnets. These bacteria are a mixed community that can "swallow" and "breathe" electrons from metals. In recent years, power generation bacteria have become a hot topic. Scientists have discovered that some bacteria found on the seabed and riverbed around the world can take electrons from tiny metal particles. By donating electrons to bacteria, iron particles become an effective source of energy for cells. Other types of bacteria can effectively breathe electrons by "delivering" excess electrons onto metal particles.

Now, James Byrne and colleagues from the University of Tübingen, Germany, have discovered that a common magnetic mineral, the tiny magnetite grains, can act as electron acceptors and electron donors at the same time and work as effectively as a battery. . He allowed colonies of bacteria belonging to the genus Geobacillus and Rhodopseudomonas to grow on top of magnets, and then found that the genus Geobacillus could “deposit†electrons onto the crystals, while Rhodopseudomonas harvested electrons from the crystals.
According to Byrne, in the natural environment, these two reactions may occur according to the day-night cycle or the ebb and flow period, and each type of bacteria is active at different points in this cycle. He also said that for bacterial communities, magnetite crystals act like a natural rechargeable battery: they are charged by the genus Geobacillus, and Rhodopseudomonas consumes electricity.
Lars Peter Nielsen from the University of Aarhus in Denmark said that the discovery was exciting and provided complete information on the multiple roles of magnets as a mineral in earth microbiology. According to the different needs of the bacteria, the magnet can be used as a conductor, or it can be an electronic "storage box" and source.
