In general, the main reason why the lightning season affects the safety of household appliances is due to the intrusion of induced lightning. Inductive lightning refers to lightning electromagnetic pulses generated in various types of metal pipes and wires that enter buildings when lightning strikes. For a family, there are four main ways in which inductive intrusion can occur: power lines, telephone lines, cable or cable television feeders, housing exteriors or columns. Among them, the first three ways are all continuous with the external circuits of household appliances. When these lines belong to the overhead room, the damage is more serious. Because of the strong electric induction effect, high lightning electromagnetic pulses are generated on these overhead conductors, and electromagnetic pulses directly enter the household appliances along these conductors and cause damage. What is often overlooked at present is the fourth way to invade a mine by induction, that is, the installation of household appliances does not maintain a certain distance from the exterior walls and pillars of the building. Because when the household in which the building is located directly hits or strikes the mine, strong lightning currents will flow down the outer wall and columns of the building into the ground. During this process, electric and magnetic fields are generated in the surrounding space due to strong lightning current flowing through the external walls or pillars of the building. If the household appliances are placed too close to the external walls or columns, they may be damaged. In August 1996, a computer company of a telecommunications company in Shenzhen was placed next to a pillar in the middle of the building. When the building was struck by lightning, the computer was magnetized by electromagnetic pulses generated by powerful lightning currents flowing along the steel bars into the ground. The entire screen is colorful. A ground satellite station in Guangzhou was stacked on three unopened computers about 30 centimeters from the external wall of the building and was completely damaged during a lightning strike. According to the "Beijing Daily" report, in 1997 in Beijing, only 300 televisions were damaged by lightning strikes, and there were more than 300 telephones. Other household appliances such as refrigerators, air conditioners, and computers also accounted for a considerable proportion. What's more, the casualties caused by lightning strikes often occur when using household appliances.
So, how can we ensure the safety of household appliances and users? The technical specifications and experience of lightning protection tell us: First, buildings should be equipped with direct lightning protection facilities such as lightning rods, deflectors, and grounding bodies in accordance with the lightning protection design code. They can introduce most of the lightning current into the underground discharge. Secondly, the power lines, telephone lines, and television signal lines that are introduced into residential buildings should be shielded from the ground, so that some of the lightning could leak into the ground.
The above two shall be handled by the architects of the architectural design and construction department, as well as the design and construction units of telephone exchanges and public antennas (or closed-circuit television systems). In order to ensure safety, users should install household appliances over-voltage protectors (also known as lightning arresters) on the corresponding lines. For an average family, three surge arresters are needed: The first is a single-phase power surge arrestor installed at the power switch box of the power supply line to the home. The second is a TV feed line lightning arrester, which is installed after the television feeder enters the room. The third place is the telephone lightning arrester, which is installed on the telephone line after entering the room, so that the telephone is connected to the telephone outside line through the telephone arrester. The function of the lightning arrester is to divide and limit the lightning electromagnetic pulses invaded from the line so as to realize the safety of the household appliances protected by the lightning arrester. The installation position of household appliances should be as far away from the external wall or column as possible. Also pay attention to regularly check the grounding wire commonly used by household appliances. The enclosure of most household appliances is almost connected to this grounding wire. Its main purpose is to protect personal safety. When the lightning arrester is installed, the grounding of all arresters is connected to this grounding wire. If the grounding wire is loosened or disconnected, the housing of the household appliance may be charged and the arrester may not work properly.
In the past, many people proposed not to use household appliances in thunderstorm days, such as unplugging the TV's power plug, antenna plug, and not calling during thunder. Of course, this is not safe, but sometimes it does not feel inconvenient. For example, when someone calls, is it right? Refrigerators and air conditioners can't use lightning to enter home without power. Therefore, it is recommended that you take the above lightning protection method. Of course, when the current conditions are not mature, unplugging all plugs is also an emergency measure.
