Recently, in the International Journal of Environment and Waste Management, a team from India proposed an alternative method of straw burning, that is, straw can be used to generate electricity and produce bioethanol! Straw is the waste of rice production. Normally, after the rice is broken down, farmers will choose to burn straw on the spot or in the field, so that weeds can be removed to provide nutrients.
However, due to the deterioration of the environment in recent years, many regions have implemented a straw burning ban policy. A lot of straw is piled up to rot. The technical problem of using straw to generate electricity has long been resolved, but the problem of economic benefits has not been promoted in most regions.
A power plant with a capacity of only 12 MW uses straw as fuel and consumes at least 1 million tons of straw each year. This is really a good thing for straw.
The research team pointed out that some areas in China are using straw to generate electricity, and they are also encouraged by subsidy policies, but the number of straw power plants is not large, and there is a trend of decreasing year by year. Therefore, the technology and benefits of straw power generation still need to be improved. Under appropriate geographical and political conditions, electricity production and bioethanol production can be combined.
