[Reporter]: I am very glad that Teacher Wu can be interviewed. Teacher Wu is also the head of the blue calico. First, ask Teacher Wu to introduce us to the blue print cloth.
Wu Yuanxin: China's blue prints originated in the Southern Song Dynasty. They originated from Anting Town in Jiading, Jiangnan Province. Later, they spread from the south of the Yangtze River and spread from Jiangsu to the whole country. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, 90% of the Han areas in China were using blue calico as their home textile products. Therefore, the blue printed cloth series is one of the earliest home textile products in China. Among the people, it is deeply loved by the public.
[Reporter]: Blue calico seems to be more common in the southern region.
Wu Yuanxin: It has now been awarded the first batch of national “intangible cultural heritageâ€, one is a blue-printed printing and dyeing base in Nantong, and the third batch of state-level intangibles has placed Phoenix in Hunan. So now there are two national non-material cultural heritage. The only inheritance base of Chinese blue calico cloth that has been awarded as the hometown of Chinese blue calico is the blue calico museum in Nantong. The current status of blue calico is basically the same.
[Reporter]: Can you tell us about the characteristics of blue calico?
Wu Yuanxin: Nantong's blue calico including China's blue calico has been passed down to today, mainly its traditional craftsmanship. Its second pattern has been loved by the common people. The printing process of the blue printing cloth must first be engraved. This is the flower version of the Fengxi Peony, which is loved by the common people. Others like this squid jumping gantry are the traditional folk art.
This is the process of blue printing cloth, the first to be hand-engraved, the second to scrape the pulp, the anti-slurry scraping on the blue print cloth pattern above, play a role in anti-dying. This stain-resist is mainly made from soybean flour and lime powder. After the preparation, dyed grass was used for dyeing. After the color is dyed, the mortar is scraped off, and after it is scraped off, it becomes a blue-and-white clear blue calico. All patterns of blue prints are good fortune, so people are also very fond of it.
[Reporter]: This is a very special feature in your hand. Can you tell us about it?
Wu Yuanxin: This is a blue calico fish that we won the “Chinese Folk Literature Three Flowers Awardâ€. It is now a tourist attraction on the north and south of the Grand River. We all sell our fish on the top, which I studied at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1989. Designed for the past, it has been loved by people for nearly two decades. Because it reflects the good wishes that people like to have more than one year.
I also did research on the blue calico technique at the Institute of Blue Cloths at Nantong University. We also collected more than 20,000 blue prints across the country. We also published the "China Blue Printed Patterns Collection" and also developed more than 1,000 designs. Blue print cloth series products.
[Reporter]: Miss Wu, because I know that blue calico is a traditional process. After it entered the modern world, has there been any improvement? Or do we make some changes based on the current life situation?
Wu Yuanxin: Because we have to meet the needs of modern life. The original is a blanket, wrapping cloth, mosquito nets, and now we apply it in the middle of modern life. For example, we have made tablecloth series, wall hanging series, shoes and hats series, handicrafts series, clothing series and bags series. We have five major series of more than 2,000 varieties, which are suitable for the needs of modern people.
[Reporter]: It can be said that we can use blue calico products in every aspect of our lives?
Wu Yuanxin: Yes, in our present life, whether it is small bags, hats, or small decorations and clothing in the family, blue print cloth is everywhere. The original blue calico is also used in various aspects of life. Now that people's living standards are improving and people's material life is abundant, our blue calico must also suit modern people's needs. We will now also be on silk, suitable for people wearing blue calico clothing in summer.
[Reporter]: This is also the protection of our intangible cultural heritage. Then what kind of approach do we have to inherit such a technique and let more consumers understand the blue calico?
Wu Yuanxin: We are now divided into several areas. One is to pass on the blue calico by developing inheritors. We have a blue-printed fabric dyeing studio at the Fine Arts Academy of Tsinghua University. In Tianjin University, there is also a blue print shop showing the entire process flow of blue calico. I also took graduate students at Suzhou University, graduated students at Nantong University, passed the intangible cultural heritage through higher education institutions, and secondly, students went to our Blue Calico Museum to innovate new products in our dye shop. Thirdly, we have cultivated inheritors in the dyeing workshops. We have originally recruited some graduates from the school and love traditional craftsmanship. We passed on this craft from generation to generation.
[Reporter]: I have been to some ancient towns and I have seen many people on the ancient town making blue calicos. I wonder if it is one of the inheritance methods.
Wu Yuanxin: In one respect, we see a lot of blue calico in the market, but many tourist attractions do not retain original flavor. Just like our embroidery, there are hand-embroidered, with the current machine embroidery, it is also allowed to circulate in the market. Then the blue calico is also the case. The first is the inheritance of the intangible cultural heritage that we have preserved. This process has been preserved since the Ming and Qing dynasties. The second thing that is popular on the market today is printed by computer-engraved machines. It is an industrialized tourism product that can only be within the scope of industrialized tourism products. It is not a cultural heritage. Both forms are Can be circulated in the middle of our lives, and some people like the original blue calico, so let it continue, and some people say I want a little more, I want to machine India, then in the middle of life, there is One aspect passes it on. Therefore, if you want to inherit the cultural heritage, of course, it is original, you have to like some tourism products, you can say a little more, in the middle of life to make a small bag of small hat can also be circulated in life, but I am afraid it is An industrial tourism product.
[Reporter]: This time to attend the show, hoping to let more people understand the blue print cloth?
Wu Yuanxin: Yes, I have just displayed a blue calico show back in Italy. One of our wishes is to promote blue calico and let people know that it is a precious cultural heritage. Because our country is even a young man in the blue-printed region, and it is not known that it is a cultural heritage. Once the old man passes away, our traditions and customs are to burn him with this kind of physical and precious cultural heritage left behind. Young people do not know that this is a cultural heritage, unlike our ceramics, a woodcarving, and an embroidery. Young people know that they should keep it. For the blue calico, everyone thinks it is a symbol of backwardness. Once the old man passes away, he burns everything he has used to him. Young people do not understand this aspect. The purpose of our exhibition, especially the desire to let young people know that the blue calico is our country’s outstanding cultural heritage. If we find at home that your ancestors still have a blue calico, be sure to keep it if you discard it. It is a pity.
The last time we exhibited at the World Expo was very good. Everyone saw that the blue calico is also a cultural heritage and a treasure of our country. It should be passed on. All of our exhibitions nowadays, as long as they are large-scale, we can have such an opportunity to publicize, we will promote the blue calico, let the whole society to protect the cultural heritage of our country, let our children and grandchildren see more Our country’s cultural heritage.
[Reporter]: Yes, thank you, Miss Wu, and hope that more and more people will like blue prints.
