U.S. Develops Technology to Directly Measure Electronic Speed - Can Be Applied to Solar Cells

According to the report of the American Physicist Organization Network on March 1 (Beijing time), American physicists said they have explored a new method of detecting current. This method is based on the second harmonic generation process, like a "radar speedometer" that can remotely monitor the electronic speed, can directly "see" the movement of the electron and measure the speed of the electron. Research papers were published in the journal Physical Review Letters.

Zhao Hui, a professor of physics at the University of Kansas, and Judy Wu, a professor at the University of Kansas, conducted the experiment at the Ultrafast Laser Laboratory. They found that the light emitted by a high-energy laser emits light of different colors when it is irradiated onto a material containing mobile electrons. In the experiment, they carefully studied the thin gallium arsenide crystal material, which is widely used in high-speed electronics and high-speed photonics. By applying a voltage to the monolithic crystals, they allow electrons to flow within the crystal at a specific rate. Irradiating the crystal with an infrared laser pulse that is invisible to the human eye produces red light visible to the human eye, which is the signal that occurs during the second harmonic generation.

They also found that the brightness of the red light is proportional to the speed of the electrons, that is, the faster the electrons move, the brighter the red light; and when the electrons do not move directly, no red light appears. Zhao Hui said: "By detecting red light, we can accurately measure the speed of electrons, and electrons do not need to contact other samples; we also do not interfere with electronic activity. Prior to this study, existing detection experiment technology was based on three currents. One effect: It can charge the system, change the temperature of the system and generate a magnetic field. Scientists have recently discovered that currents also have a photonic effect. This new method of using lasers to study currents is entirely based on this latest effect."

The researchers said that the new method is expected to improve many of today's renewable energy technologies, such as solar cells, artificial photosynthesis, and water decomposition, because these technologies rely on the detection of current. Moreover, sensors that better "read" electronic motion may become the basis for the next generation of mobile phones and computers. (Reporter Liu Xia)
