According to Moscow, September 16th: RUSAL, the world's largest aluminum producer, said on Thursday that it will restart construction of an alumina plant in the north of the country.
The alumina refinery project with an annual capacity of 700,000 tons was postponed indefinitely in 2008. Due to the economic crisis, market demand was reduced and the company decided to reduce alumina and aluminum production.
The company said it expects the alumina plant to be built in 2013 and put into production within four years.
RUSAL's aluminum production accounts for approximately 10% of global production.
In 2009, the company's aluminum production was 3.9 million tons, which was 11% lower than the 2008 production. In 2009, the company's alumina production was 7.3 million tons, a 36% decrease from 2008.
The company said it plans to increase alumina production by 11% or 800,000 tons this year and increase aluminum production by 3% or 100,000 tons due to improved market conditions.
