Although Tesla electric cars and others may attract a lot of attention, many electric cars are actually small vehicles designed specifically for urban use, manufactured by struggling startup companies. By simplifying the design and production process, the new wheel module can help increase the economic viability of building such vehicles.
The component was created by a team at the University of Waterloo, Canada. Each individual unit includes a wheel with an integrated electric motor, as well as braking, suspension, steering, and control systems (powered by the vehicle's existing battery pack).
Car manufacturers can simply fix the prefabricated wheel units to the corners of the car frame without having to design and manufacture all these individual parts from scratch. Then, the steering, acceleration, and braking commands will be transmitted electronically from the car, rather than mechanically. As a side benefit of this arrangement, it eliminates components such as steering columns and there will be more space in the car for passengers or cargo.
In the current state of the technology, each module weighs approximately 40 kilograms (88 pounds). And these units use an active wheel-climbing system for small electric cars-this means that when the car is driving along a slope, the wheels will automatically keep the car stable by tilting.
"The idea is modularity and plug-and-play control functions," Professor Amir Khajepour said. "In a sense, our wheel set is a whole car with only one wheel. All that is missing is the body."
Now the research team plans to require the system to be expanded, so it can also be used in large utilities and commercial electric vehicles. The researchers recently published a paper on the technology in the Journal of Automotive Engineering.
