Study on the bonding state between Mo-plated diamond and binder

Abstract The interface bonding state of Mo-plated Mo in Fe-based, Ni-based, Cu-based and Co-based binders was investigated by bending strength test, scanning electron microscopy and energy spectrum analysis. The results show that the main components in the binder have diffused to reach the diamond surface under hot pressing conditions of 700-840 °C; Mo
The coating did not form a strong interfacial bond with the diamond; in the flexural strength test, the Mo layer was substantially stripped of the diamond surface with the bonding agent. After the surface of diamond was plated with Mo, the flexural strength of Fe-based, Ni-based and Cu-based composites decreased, while the flexural strength of Co-based composites increased significantly. The change in flexural strength is mainly due to the local strengthening and hardening of the binder by Mo and the resulting thermal stress changes in the composite and the Mo layer changing the wetting of the diamond by the binder.
