Soft X-ray laser bombards metal to make transparent aluminum

According to the United States "Daily Science" website reported on July 27, the British University of Oxford scientists use the world's more powerful soft X-ray laser to bombard metal, made of transparent aluminum. The results of this research can provide inspiration to planetary science and the use of nuclear fusion energy.

Before the transparent aluminum only existed in science fiction novels, because of the movie "Star Trek 4" and became famous. An international team of scientists led by Oxford University scientists focused all energy on a point less than 1/20th the diameter of human hair. Using a free electron laser device (FLASH) to generate short pulses to bombard the core electrons of each aluminum atom in the sample. Without destroying the crystal structure inside the metal, the aluminum metal becomes nearly transparent in the extreme ultraviolet radiation state. This shows that a strong X-ray source can create new material states. But this effect can only last for a very short time, about 40 femtoseconds.

Justin Walker of the School of Physics at the University of Oxford said: “We have developed new substances that have never before been involved. Transparent aluminum is just a beginning. The physical properties of the substances we are developing are closely related to the internal conditions of large planets; we It is also hoped that by studying such substances, it will be possible to have a clearer understanding of the formation process of small stars that also require high-intensity laser implosion excitation; and one day, nuclear fusion energy can also be utilized on the earth."

Professor Walker said: "The extraordinary thing about our experiment is that only ordinary high-intensity lasers are used to transform ordinary aluminum into new-state material materials. In some particular aspects, it behaves as if we had already added each aluminum atom. Converted to silicon atoms, it's as if you've found that using light sources to convert lead into gold is magical!"

This discovery has been made possible by the development of new radiation sources that are 10 billion times brighter than any synchrotron in the world. The free electron laser device (FLASH) in the center of the electronic synchrotron in Hamburg, Germany, can generate extremely short soft X-ray pulses, each of which is more powerful than a power plant that can supply an entire city of electricity. The researchers firmly believe that this photoionization ionization method is an ideal method for the development of new-state substances, which will also provide effective help for further research in various fields such as planetary science, astrophysics, and nuclear fusion energy utilization.
