Seiko develops a low-noise, miniaturized brushless motor for electric power steering

Seiko has announced the development of low noise, miniaturization and high efficiency brushless motor and motor control technology for electric power steering (EPS).
This motor is miniaturized by the effective use of magnets, which is 10% smaller than the original product and also increases torque. In addition, a motor current control technology capable of smoothly switching to high-speed rotation has been developed, achieving high output, miniaturization, and weight reduction, while reducing the operating noise of the electric power steering system by about 3 dB.
By reducing the size of the motor, the motor and ECU (motor control unit) can be placed adjacent to each other, and the volume and weight are reduced by 38% and 13%, respectively, compared to the separate configuration of the ECU and the motor. In addition, since the motor wiring is shortened, wiring loss can be reduced, which can increase the system efficiency by about 30 W and reduce the radio noise of the motor wiring.
The company will use EPS based on this new technology in mid- to high-end cars (1.5 to 3.5L). The goal is to reach 1.3 million annual sales in 2010.
