Scientists plan to use this microorganism called Pyrococcus furiosus to convert carbon dioxide into energy
According to foreign media reports, scientists at the University of Georgia in the United States have discovered ways to convert atmospheric carbon dioxide into useful industrial products. Their discovery may help people use the carbon dioxide in the air to produce biofuels.
Michael Adams, a member of the Institute for Bioenergy Systems at the University of Georgia, said: “Basically what we do is to make a microbe that can absorb carbon dioxide like plants and produce useful products.†This process is similar to this. Photosynthesis of plants, sugars produced by plant photosynthesis can be fermented into fuels such as ethanol, but sugars produced by plants are difficult to extract.
Adams said: "This discovery means that we can remove the intermediary plant, directly from the atmosphere to obtain carbon dioxide, and convert it into useful products such as fuel, chemicals, etc."
This process may be achieved through a unique microorganism called Pyrococcus furiosus, which grows and grows by eating sugars in the salty seawater near the geothermal outlet. By manipulating the genetic material of this microbe, Adams and his colleagues developed a new type of Pyrococcus pyogenes capable of eating carbon dioxide at lower temperatures.
The research team used hydrogen to create a chemical reaction capable of synthesizing carbon dioxide into hydroxypropionic acid in a new type of Pyrococcus pyogenes. Hydroxypropionic acid is a common industrial chemical used to make acrylics and other products. Adams and his colleagues also conducted other genetic manipulations on the new type of Pyrococcus so that they could produce other useful chemical products such as fuel. When this kind of fuel produced by Pyrococcus furiosus burns, it releases the same amount of carbon dioxide as the amount of carbon dioxide needed to make it.
