Japanese experts have confirmed through animal experiments that lactoferrin, an ingredient contained in milk and human breast milk, has the effect of preventing radiation damage.
Japan’s “Yomiuri Shimbun†reported that researchers from the Japan Institute of Radiological Medicine and other institutions divided 50 experimental mice into two groups of the same amount, and only one group of feed was mixed with 0.1% of lactoferrin, and Lasts for one month. After that, all 50 mice were irradiated with high-dose X-rays sufficient to cause the death of more than half of the rats. After 30 days of exposure to X-rays, the survival rate of the mice that did not consume lactoferrin was 62%, and the survival rate of the mice that received the lactoferrin feed was 85%.
The researchers also conducted an “emergency treatment experiment†in which the same dose of X-rays was used to irradiate other experimental mice that had not consumed lactoferrin, and immediately after the irradiation, the rats were injected with 0.3 ml of saline containing 4 mg of lactoferrin. The survival rate of these experimental rats that received emergency treatment was as high as 90% after 30 days.
Lactoferrin has an antioxidant effect and can remove active oxygen, one of the cancer triggers. Researchers believe that lactoferrin prevents radiation damage should also be at work with this antioxidant property.
