China's development of nuclear power has maintained a good safety record in the operation of the nuclear power unit. The construction quality of the units under construction is under control. The overall research situation of the research reactors is good, and no major operational events have occurred. In 2013, the safety level of China's nuclear facilities was further improved. A total of 10 Class 0 incidents occurred in 17 units, with no level 1 incidents and good safety performance.
Reporter: So what is the status of waste disposal at nuclear power plants?
Pan Ziqiang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering: I think that the waste of our nuclear power plant is an urgent problem to be solved. Up to now, our waste disposal site has been built two, but one is in the west, and that is actually not built for this nuclear power plant. It (the waste of nuclear power plants) is now temporarily stored. After the waste is solidified, there is a warehouse for storage, which is stored here. But it is not a permanent disposal. This permanent disposal problem, I think is a problem that needs to be strengthened now.
Reporter: So apart from this waste disposal issue, what short-term versions do you think China's nuclear safety regulation still exists?
Pan Ziqiang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering: I think this is the case. The supervision of our safety should be good in general. However, we are safe, relatively speaking, and research is not enough, such as the handling of this serious accident, such as the study of the reliability of equipment.
Just like our country, such a large nuclear power plan, in the corresponding basic research, I think it should be strengthened, not completely satisfied with my current affairs. According to the current plan, by 2020, it should be said that the number of nuclear power plants may be the second in the world. Then, by 2030, the country does not have this plan. According to the current development trend, it is likely to become the world's number one. But under such a situation, if our corresponding basic research is going to follow up, then I think there is still something that is not enough.
