Recently, Spanish King Juan Carlos I, Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates And the Minister of Science and Innovation of Spain, Christine Garmentia, and the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education of Portugal, Jose Mariano Gago, jointly unveiled the Iberia International Nanotechnology Laboratory.
The Iberia International Nanotechnology Laboratory is the first laboratory in Europe to be established under the international legal framework, focusing on nanotechnology research, and the first international scientific research institution on the Iberian Peninsula. Like the European Institute of Particle Physics, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory and other international research institutions, the laboratory provides the first opportunity and convenience for scientific research in nanotechnology in Europe. In November 2005, the laboratory was jointly initiated by the governments of Portugal and Spain and has established partnerships with universities and research centers in Europe, North America and Asia. At present, the main building of the laboratory has been completed and will welcome the first batch of staff. They will begin to operate the lab and recruit outstanding researchers worldwide. The laboratory is expected to officially start research activities at the end of 2009.
Nanotechnology research at the atomic and molecular levels has enormous potential impacts on several areas of science and applications, such as medicine and industry. Because nanotechnology can enhance the competitiveness of existing and emerging industries and promote rapid medical advancement, it has been regarded by the EU as the core strategic driving force for future economic and social development. EU member states invested a total of 3.5 billion euros in the research and technology development framework of the European Union (2007-2013) to fund research on nanotechnology, which also reflects the EU's emphasis on nanotechnology.
The laboratory is funded by Portugal and Spain in equal proportions and is also partially supported by the European Community Regional Development Fund, which is funded by the “Portugal-Spanish Cross-border Cooperation Project†and the “Northern Portugal Regional Operation Planâ€.
“Combining technology, knowledge and human capital, the Iberia International Nanotechnology Laboratory will adhere to a results-oriented development strategy and use its advantages in international legal status to create scientific value,†said Labs, the head of the laboratory. "We believe that through the efforts of all parties, we can spread the top scientific research results that benefit the economy and social development around the world."
The lab will work closely with universities, research centers and business incubators around the world to develop projects in four areas: nanomedicine, environmental monitoring, food quality control and safety, nanoelectronics and nanomanipulation.
The lab plans to hire 200 researchers, including 25% of tenured positions. In addition, 100 doctoral students and 100 technicians, administrators and other support staff will be recruited, and the total number will reach approximately 400.
In the past two years, the lab has established strategic partnerships with many research centers and universities, all of which involve challenging research projects in nanoscience and nanotechnology. The main purpose of establishing this knowledge network is to create a close connection between the sharing of information, technology and resources between different agencies, while providing scientific solutions to meet current social needs.
