Distorted Transgenic Rice Dispute

This may make many people unbelievable. Since the second half of last year, the most heated and enduring topic of debate on the Chinese Internet is actually neither house prices nor violent demolition, but an ordinary person seems to be almost plugged in. Unprovoked scientific question: Should GM rice be commercialized?

At the end of November 2009, the agricultural sector issued biosafety certificates for two types of genetically modified rice and corn; when the No. 1 document published on January 31 this year publicly proposed the “industrialization of new genetically modified varieties,” the controversy was obviously upgraded and trended. Intensified; then, the debate's battlefield even moved to the national "two sessions" held after the Spring Festival... This unwillingness forced the Ministry of Agriculture to make a special statement at a press conference in March: the issuance of security certificates is only The evaluation and affirmation of scientists' research work on genetically modified organisms and their achievements are not the same as allowing commercial production. The Ministry of Agriculture has never approved the import of any kind of genetically modified grain seeds into commercial cultivation in China, and there are no genetically modified food crops grown in China.

However, soon, the debate on the main battlefield was shifted from the purely scientific attitude of “whether it should be treated with caution to a new technology” to the issue of national food security—even the national security of the entire country itself. This has led to a rapid escalation of debate and warming. In my opinion, this is also why a large number of critics who are far more interested in politics than in scientific interest have had the opportunity to swear on this issue. It is said that the global technology patents for genetically modified agricultural products are basically monopolized by the three multinational companies Monsanto, DuPont and Bayer of Germany, and that genetically modified rice can't be preserved. This means that, once large-scale commercialization is planted, China will not only pay high fees for foreign patents each year in the future. Moreover, the rice seeds that have nurtured the Chinese people for thousands of years will largely be held in the hands of foreigners! Associating the potentially harmful nature of genetically modified agricultural products, as long as we make a little more rational imagination in the direction of the conspiracy theories, it naturally becomes a point in the eyes of some left-wingers who are originally anti-Western (especially hostile to the United States). The Western imperialism, which is even more opium poisoning than that year, is a tool for us to “finance financial damage!” Experience tells us that in China, once everything has fallen into this logic, the normal rationality and judgment of a large number of people will be instantly lost. I say this not only refers to the opponents of genetic transformation, in fact, many advocates (they are said to be mainly "liberals") have similar thinking patterns, but only in the opposite direction.

What I have seen from the confusion and litigation is that most of them are actually nothing to do with the GM rice and its commercialization. The latter is at best only an intermediary used by some people to express their political opinions.

Progress in science and technology can benefit society, and it can also be a mischief. This is an unarguable simple principle. But what exactly should be done with a specific new invention? I am afraid that this problem may ultimately have to be entrusted to scientists in the field. Therefore, the real problem is the extreme distrust of ordinary people in the science and technology of our society. Those who wholeheartedly defend "food security" and care for "the nation's perilous life" really oppose the commercialization of GM rice, and they are opposed to opening the Chinese market to foreigners. I can even say with certainty that if most of the world's genetically modified patents are held in China's hands, most of them will immediately become the most enthusiastic advocates and promoters of genetically modified commercialization. This is because we have mastered the "national security" of others, such as the United States, and this must be their most ardent fantasies. As for those who suspect that the elites are eating out of the box, obscuring operations, and trading in money rights, what they are opposed to is actually undemocratic, opaque, and unconstrained by the people in the process of making decisions. In this case, assuming that the Ministry of Agriculture rejected the application for the commercialization of a genetically modified rice in the same manner as “sneaky” (described in their words), they may also firmly oppose it. After all, what they are concerned about is how their own civil rights—such as the right to know and the right to supervise—will be reflected in the government's decision-making process.

By dissecting the sparrow of genetically modified rice, we can clearly see how a scientific issue with a very clear border was under the circumstances of the existence of serious defects in China’s current democracy and the rule of law, and how the nationalist ideological trend is surging. , distorted and blurred. However, I still want to point out that treating all things in a “political incumbent” way of thinking not only does not help solve the problem, but it is likely to cause many new and bigger problems, including the political issue itself.

I am not interested in prescribing prescriptions here, but I think that if we are really considering the constructive attitude of trying to solve problems in terms of the commercialization of genetically modified rice, we will only end up with food and environmental safety assessments and commercial monopolies. Examinations, complete disclosure of commodity information and other aspects to proceed - if laws and regulations are complete, then promote its implementation; if there are loopholes, then promote its improvement. I also believe that only achieving solid results on these concrete issues step by step is the most effective and most desirable strategy for improving the country’s macropolitical situation.

Regrettably, according to the information I got from some media, although the slogans of "anti-imperialist" and "anti-corruption" that the righteous people shouted constantly forced the Ministry of Agriculture to make concessions, at the same time, The cultivation and trade of unlicensed GM rice in Hubei and other places are rapidly expanding and spreading...
