Biocoke alleviates soil compaction stress

Soil compaction problems caused by modern agricultural measures such as mechanical operations and no-tillage (decreased yields and increased N2O emissions) are increasingly receiving public attention. Biochar has loose pore characteristics, and its effect of relieving soil compaction is directly related to the solution of soil compaction problems and agricultural utilization of biochar.

The Xie Zubin research group of the Nanjing Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, used the field in situ micro-domain experiment to study the effects of biochar on relieving soil compaction on wheat growth and N2O emission and its mechanism. The results showed that biochar can relieve the stress of wheat on soil growth, reduce soil compaction, increase soil porosity, increase field water holding capacity, and reduce total N2O emission in wheat season. The impact of biochar on soil N2O emissions is mainly due to its chemical regulation effect on soil rather than the physical regulation effect. The increase of soil pH caused by biochar increases the abundance of soil ammonia oxidizing bacteria and N2O reducing bacteria, resulting in the N2O emission of soil under low soil moisture conditions (<70), provided that the soil has sufficient nitrogen substrate (after applying N fertilizer). % WHC) increased by an average of 13%, while it decreased by an average of 36% under high soil moisture conditions (>70% WHC). According to the interactive effects of biochar, soil moisture, and nitrogen fertilizers on N2O emissions from soils, it is recommended to apply N fertilizer or apply N fertilizer before rain, which will be more conducive to the reduction of N2O emissions from biochar.

This study provides a theoretical basis for how to effectively use biochar to relieve soil compaction and reduce N2O emission. The above research results were published in Soil Biology and Biochemistry.
